Late Sunday morning, Bill Boyd, the chauffer and husband of Debie, picked up Kiki and her horse Jennie from their home, jst northwest of Olympia. then, he drove out to pick up Kesi and her horse Kee-a-wali from their home between Dryad and Doty. Meanwhile, Pam ad Debie stayed home to continue packing. Everyone was going to meet at the Boyd farm and Dena was not expected until late in the afternoon, as she had County Fair competition.

Bill brought his passengers to the Boyd farm and the two horses were turned out into a small pasture, so that they could wait comfortably and become familiar with one another. Kiki and Kesi joined Debie and Pam in checking to make sure that everything was included, and they even gave some thought as to how to pack the saddle bags and still fit it all in. They enjoyed the warm sun during the afternoon, it gave hope that the trip would be a dry one.

They finally received a call from mary Evans, mother of Dena and second chauffer, she had a flat tire and a bad spare. She said she would meet everyone in Woodland; at about 11:30, both trailers met up and continued on to Surprise Lakes.

There was a long hill just passed Cougar were both rigs began to overheat, but most of the way was paved with only occasional gravel patches. As they arrived at Surprise Lakes, they drove passed where the PCNST crossed the road and Bill drove into an Indian camp area and almost got stuck. He made it out with a lot of creaking and groaning from the hitch, which scared Kesi and Kiki.

Both the trailers went back to the point where the PCNST crossed and unloaded right along the road. Because it was about 3:30 in the morning, the group decided not to set up a tent, but to sleep on tarps, in the open, under the stars. The horses were tied nearby and fed what hay had been brought along. After Bill and Mary had left with the trailers and everyone was comfy in their sleeping bags, they talked about the stars and their expectations of the forth coming adventure.
