Monday morning was slightly dewy, but the sun was shining and combined with a breeze, soon dried everything out again. Four of the horses (April, Critter, Snickers, and Penny) were given the hay that was left over from the night before, and the others were hobbled and turned out to graze in a meadow across the road from camp. Kee-a-wali decided she wasn’t going to move with the hobbles on until Britt came over to pick a fight, and then she moved faster than ever. Jennie was in heat and Echo had to be persuaded not to get ideas.

Debie picked some wild strawberries, with some help from Kiki and Kesi; everyone sampled the blue huckleberries too. No one wanted to fix breakfast so they just ate some pop-tarts before spending the next three hours trying to get all the equipment evenly weighted into the pack bags. While they were packing, some people drove up to pick berries; one, an old man, said that he was part indian.

The group rode out about 11:30; Kiki rode Jennie and led Critter packed with saddle bags, Kesi rode Kee-a-wali, Pam rode the Black Mare (Penny), Dena rode April and led Snickers packed with the saddle boxes and the tent, and Debie rode Britt and led Echo packed with another set of saddle bags. After leaving the meadows of Surprise Lakes, the trail wandered through varying forests. The horses were all a little jumpy, their riders were all excited and the horses were fresh; it took a while for the horses to settle down and work the trail. After a couple hours they decided to take a 1/2 mile detour to Steamboat Lake, below Steamboat Mountain, for a lunch break.
