The group stopped below one rocky bluff just past Burnt Rock, which was a bunch of lava boulders on a grassy slope. Nearby was a small stream about one inch wide, but it had an even flow, thus filled puddles for the horses to drink. Stopping for a lunch break, everyone sat around with horses tied to little spruce trees to allow for grazing.

The meadow was very large, but had only small patches of grass. The ashy soil or sand was most every where and the sun beat off it something fierce. The riders found what little bit of shade they could under the small trees, in order to eat lunch. It was too hot to sleep, but it felt good to rest; it was an opportunity to breath without breathing dust.
